10 Things to Do in Kent During January

Winter is a spectacular time to visit Kent. Think wide-open skies above empty beaches, plenty of cosy pubs to warm up in, and lots of year-round attractions suited to all family members. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a wellness getaway with friends or a family reunion, here are ten things you can enjoy in Kent during January and beyond.

Take a vineyard tour

Kent is home to countless vineyards thanks to its mild climate and long summers. During winter, though, you can still enjoy scenic tours and cosy indoor tastings, which is a lovely ‘date night’ idea if you’re visiting Kent for a romantic weekend or short break. We’ve rounded up some of the county’s best vineyards here

Explore the Shell Grotto

Margate’s Shell Grotto remains a mystery. How did it get there? Who is responsible? What does it mean? However, all of these questions become irrelevant when you’re actually inside the chamber, marvelling over 4.6 million shells. Ornate and fascinating, this lesser-known attraction is the perfect antidote to the winter woes.

Bask in the January blues

With around 350 miles of coastline, there are plenty of opportunities to visit the beach or simply soak up the sea views. From chalky cliffs to sandy swathes, Kent’s beaches are varied, and each have their own appeal. Walk between the iconic sea stacks of Botany Bay, or gaze out to France from St Margaret’s Bay. Sea Scrub Sauna Whitstable

Visit a seafront sauna

The Sea Scrub Sauna experience is perfect for adding an element of wellness to your January trip to Kent. With sites in Margate, Whitstable and Faversham (with Folkestone hopefully coming soon,) you can enjoy the dopamine hit of a cold plunge alongside if you’re brave enough, or simply savour the sauna session followed by a hot coffee and the sound of the waves.

Each Sea Scrub Sauna session is thoughtfully designed to reconnect you with the elements. Step from the warmth of the wood-fired sauna into crisp sea air, feel the rhythm of the tide, and embrace the restorative contrast of heat and cold. It’s an invigorating coastal ritual that leaves you refreshed, rebalanced and ready to start the year well.

Pubs in Kent | Best Things to do in Kent

Enjoy a walk with a cosy pub pit-stop

Beaches, forests and rolling greenery – Kent has it all. What’s more, as the oldest county in England, it’s also home to many postcard-perfect pubs with roaring fires and delicious grub. Combine the two, and you’ve got yourself some beautiful winter walks with welcome pit stops. You can find a wonderful list of Kentish pubs here, or take a look at our own guide to great walks with pubs nearby.

Or how about some fireside reading? Whether you got gifted some books over Christmas, or you’re finally taking some downtime to tackle that TBR list, there’s nothing like a fireside nook or armchair to encourage an afternoon of reading. Pull on your comfiest PJs, stack up the firewood, pour yourself a tea and escape into another world entirely. Explore beautiful Kent cottages with fireplaces here

Visit one of the many Kentish museums

From local, community-led exhibits to widely-known establishments like Dickens House, there is a wealth of intriguing museums to experience throughout the county. Some of our favourites include:

Enjoy a day of great food and contemporary art

With a food and arts scene buzzy enough to rival any city, Margate is a wonderful choice for a January escape. We’ve compiled a jam-packed guide on things to do and places to eat, but if you want to be nourished both visually and literally, start your day with a meander through the Turner Contemporary, before lunching at DIVE and making a dinner reservation at the cosy Bottega Caruso.

Spend the day at a castle or country house

Littered with castles, forts, country houses and other beautiful buildings from a bygone era, Kent is home to no end of inspiring places that bring romance to a January day out. Hever Castle is a firm favourite, with lots to see and do for families, while the many National Trust sites throughout Kent also host seasonal events and offer beautiful walks.

Sea Views properties

Watch the sea from your window

Blue spaces are proven to reduce stress and alleviate the symptoms and anxiety and depression, as well as lowering the risks associated with cardiovascular disease. Simply sitting in view of the sea and soaking up the views can improve your health and leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. Do you need any more reason to book one of our sea view cottages? With locations all along the coastline, our collection of cottages will allow you to stay warm and dry by the window while being soothed by seascapes.
