How to Get to Kent from London: Your Complete Travel Guide

4 March 2026
amy

Life in the capital is often an intoxicating blur of busyness, which is why a regular weekend break from London is essential. In the time it takes to binge-watch a mere couple of your favourite Netflix episodes, you could reach the calming coast or countryside of Kent, where wide open skies and quaint cobbled streets await. As locals, we might be biased, but we strongly believe that one of the best things about the Garden of England is just how accessible it is. So, here is our complete guide on how to get to Kent from London.

Whitstable Coastal Trail in Kent | Best Walks in Whitstable, Kent

Where should I stay in Kent?

This depends on many things, such as what sort of trip you’d like to take, how mobile you’ll be during your stay, and whether you want a little bit of hustle and bustle or complete peace and quiet. You can browse all of our different locations in the first drop-down menu at the top of our home page, or instead, just view all of our cottages and filter by things like dates and occupancy.

If you still want a dash of arts, culture, and events during your stay, you might like to head for Canterbury or Margate – the latter of which has its very own Turner Contemporary. For countryside seclusion, Sandwich is a charming medieval town, while Ashford sits on the edge of the Kent Downs National Landscape and is perfect for vineyard hopping. For the best of everything, Deal is a safe and scenic bet.

The train is the easiest and greenest way of reaching Kent from London. Thanks to Southeastern HS1 services, you can also enjoy high-speed train journeys from London St Pancras to Ashford International in less than 40 minutes. Mainline services are also available from London Bridge, Charing Cross, London Waterloo East, Victoria, and Cannon Street, connecting to major Kent towns, with the London Bridge to Whitstable journey (as an example) taking around 1.5 hours. Sold on the idea of getting here via a scenic train ride? You can book your journey via National Rail or Southeastern.

Getting to Kent by car

Driving between London and Kent is also straightforward. Take the M25 east, opting for either the M2 (for Isle of Sheppey, Whitstable, Canterbury, & Thanet) or M20 (for Ashford, Folkestone & White Cliffs area) Be aware that if you’re coming to us from the North and East, you’ll need to cross the Dartford Bridge, and so you’ll need to pay the toll. Details of charges can be found here. Always plan your route ahead of time and use apps like Google Maps or Waze to stay updated on traffic.

Getting to Kent by coach

For bus services across Kent, Stagecoach provides connections to key train stations, towns, and tourist attractions. From London, National Express provides a coach service from Victoria Coach Station to Canterbury, which takes around 2.5 hours. Tickets start at £7.60 per person.

Getting to Kent from overseas

For those arriving from the continent, rail is one of the easiest options. Eurostar services connect major European cities to London St Pancras International, where Southeastern’s HS1 provides quick onward travel to Kent – see the ‘getting to Kent by train’ section above!

If you prefer to bring your own car to Kent from overseas, both Le Shuttle and a number of ferry operators provide seamless travel between a number of ports, but the most popular option is the Calais to Dover ferry, or the painless 35-minute Le Shuttle journey between Coquelles and Folkestone – this is a particularly good option for those travelling with pets. Selected P&O ferries also have a comfortable pet lounge, which means you don’t need to leave your four-legged friend in your car or in a kennel.

Finally, if you’re reaching us from further afield or wish to travel by air, the closest airports are London City (LCY), Gatwick (LGW), Heathrow (LHR), and Stansted (STN). For ease of transport, London airports are your best options for fast onward connections to Kent.
