Charles Dickens

Location: Broadstairs
Charles Dickens is one of Kent’s most renowned literary figures. He often spent time in Broadstairs, enjoying the seaside, which is thought to have inspired settings for David Copperfield. Today visitors can explore the Charles Dickens museum, stroll along the same coastal path Dickens once enjoyed or relax with a drink at The Charles Dickens pub.

Christopher Marlowe
Best Known Works: Doctor Faustus, Tamburlaine the Great, The Jew of Malta
Location: Canterbury
Christopher Marlowe, also known as Kit Marlowe was an Elizabethan poet born in Canterbury and baptised at St George’s Church. Often seen as William Shakespears greatest predecessor, Marlowe’s poetic works left a lasting impact on English literature. Today, Canterbury’s rich history lives on through its medieval streets, historic pubs and the Marlowe Theatre, named in his honour.

Jane Austen
Best Known Works: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma
Location: Godmersham Park, Near Canterbury
Although Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, she often visited her brother Edward Austen Knight at Godmersham Park. The glorious estate and surrounding countryside are thought to have influenced her portrayal of wealth and society in novels like Pride and Prejudice. Although the house itself is closed to the public, visitors can still enjoy the Godmersham Park Heritage Centre, which offers more insight into the estate and Austen’s connection to the area.
There is also a public footpath running through the estate offering scenic views of the house and its picturesque Folly. Just a short drive away, you can visit Goodnestone Park and take the Serpentine Walk, a two mile route with seasonal wild flowers and views across the parkland, once Austen herself used to enjoy with her brother.

H.G Wells (Herbert George Wells)
Best Known Works: The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man
Location: Sandgate, Near Folkestone
Renowned as one of the pioneers of science fiction, H.G Wells lived in Sandgate, near Folkestone during the early 20th century. It was here that he wrote several of his famous works, drawing inspiration from the coastal surroundings. His former home is now privately owned and was once a hub for literary and political discussions, hosting figures likes Joseph Conrad and Henry James.

Ian Flemming
Best Known Works: Casino Royale, Gold Finger, Dr.No
Location: St Margarets Bay, Dover
Ian Fleming, the renowned creator of James Bond, had a holiday home in St Margarets Bay, this stunning area is believed to have inspired elements of his famous Bond novels. The iconic “007” tag was inspired by the number of the coach from London to Dover, in addition to the nearby Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich said to have been the influence to the setting for Goldfinger.

Location: Deal, Kent
Elizabeth Carter was born in the seaside town of Deal and became one of the leading intellectual figures of the 18th century. Although she didn’t focus on writing traditional novels, her linguistic skills, including translations of Sappho’s poems and contributions to literature and philosophy made her an influential figure in her time. Having spent most of her life in Deal, the town still retains its peaceful charm today, making it the perfect place to relax, enjoy local food, drinks, and stunning coastal views.
